þ Anything you feel like you cover.
¡ Anything you feel like you should teach but don’t.
ý Anything you feel should not be there. New Church: Three Branches of the New Church - questions the value of this in 6th grade (KNCS) Unit 1: Native Americans-(2) GOVERNMENT/SOCIAL STRUCTURE (5TH GRADE BACS) unit 2: Early Explorers-(2) VERY EARLY EXPLORERS-OPTIONAL & (3) VIKING EXPLORE EUROPE, ICELAND, AND GREENLAND -4TH DOES THIS (5th GRADE BACS) Unit 3: Christopher Columbus-(7)LATER LIFE (5th GRADE BACS) Unit 7: English Explorers-(4) SIR MARTIN FROBISHER (5TH GRADE BACS) Unit 8: Later Explorers-(5-10) ARE ALL DONE IN 4th GRADE Geography Curriculum-Unit 4: Local State or Province-(4) CLIMATE: JUST A GENERAL OVERVIEW-NOT SPECIFICS OF RAINFALL, TEMP, WIND/WATER CURRENTS, SEASONS (5TH GRADE BACS) Unit 4: Sumer--mythology--not sure about this (BACS 6th) Unit 5: Ancient Egypt--#1--the facts listed do not seem core (BACS 6th) Unit 4: Ancient Egypt--#11 Timeline of events and people--Is this core??? (BACS 6th) Unit 10: 3 branches--strongly disagree with this being taught (BACS 6th)
Add anything you think is missing. Add to Explorers - before Marco Polo talk about Renaissance - the time when people are interested in new things which leads to exploration and the rediscovering of ancient knowledge (KNCS) Central American Geography: add learn all countries (KNCS) Countries and Islands of the Caribbean (KNCS) Later Explorers: add flight (Wrights, Lindbergh, going to moon) (KNCS) Vikings is taught at this grade level instead of 3rd and 4th. (I believe the teachers for 3rd and 4th felt it was a very full curriculum and fit better in the 5th/6th grade-along with Explorers unit. (OAS) Unit 5: Spanish Explorers: (9) OTHER SPANISH EXPLORERS-PONCE DE LEON (5TH GRADE BACS) We believe that each unit should end with application to our lives today (if a church) or contributions of the civilization (if a civilization) (BACS 6th) Teach topography/climate for each civilization and Israelitish Church (BACS 6th) Unit 6: Israelitish Church--Assyrian and Babylonian contributions to western civilization (BACS 6th)
What map skills do you teach? Map Keys, Finding Directions, Compass Rose, Latitude/Longitude, Landform Maps, Special Purpose Maps, Highway Maps, Bar Graphs, Circle Graphs, Timelines (5th Grade, BACS) Latitude/longitude, hemispheres, time zones, scales on maps, types of maps and how to read them, recreating a map (BACS 6th)
Teacher has 2-45 minute blocks per week on map skills. Uses next levels in same series (Continental Press) that grades 3/4 use (KNCS)
Explorers - maps of routes (way more maps this year) (KNCS)
Create "My Route to School" maps. (KNCS)
Do a project where students have to fill in North and South America on an only partially completed old map (KNCS)
Other things you would like to share with the committee in relation to history/social studies curriculum. Sometimes we feel there are too many explorers, but we notice that some have been cut from this list. Our Language Arts Curriculum is very intertwined with our Social Studies/History Curriculum. (5th Grade, BACS)
Where should Canada be? (KNCS)
Not particularly happy with New Church unit - seems above level and like it throws too much at students (KNCS 6th gr. yr.)
Teacher thinks 6th is a great time to learn about Mediterranean, Near East, and European geography since it fits so nicely with the churches (KNCS 6th gr. yr.)
Teacher (and teacher before) put Native Americans in 5th grade year because it goes really well with Ancient Church unit (KNCS) BACS 6th grade really likes the geography curriculum we have developed with 4 units--Europe, Africa, Independent Country study, map skills--happy to share
